The Centre: A Language for Being

Lexicon of Being

Notice·Name·Recognise

A language for what we live before we can name it.

There are experiences we know intimately but struggle to describe. Not because they are unclear, but because sometimes the words available to us are not precise enough to hold them.

The Lexicon gathers language that has emerged from lived experience: words for what happens within us, between us, and in the spaces where ordinary language falls short.

These are not instructions for what to feel. They are words to recognise yourself against.

Language has weight

Some of the largest words in our lives arrive early.

Love·Healing·Forgiveness·Success·Trauma·Rejection

We know the words long before we have lived everything they might contain.

The Lexicon distinguishes between the word at the top, and what has to exist underneath it for that word to hold.

Summit Words

Love·Healing·Forgiveness·Success

The words at the top of the mountain. Words with enormous meaning, easily spoken. But saying the word does not create the experience. A summit word has weight only when something underneath it can hold it.

Underwords

Safety·Care·Consistency·Truth

The ground beneath the word. Someone can say “I love you”, but the word love does not tell you what was lived beneath it. Was there safety? Was there care? Was there consistency? Was there truth?

The summit is visible. The ground is what makes it stand.

The Lexicon

Words that grew from the work.

Recognise, do not memorise

The Centre

The part of you that knows before you can explain why. Not necessarily a thought. Sometimes a pull. A hesitation. A sense that something is right, or isn’t, before you can produce the reasoning for it. The Centre names that inner place of knowing beneath performance, roles and ready-made definitions.

In a lineTruth in the shape of feeling.

The Delay

The space between experience and meaning. Something happens. You know it matters. But you don’t yet know what it means. The Delay is the interval in which you don’t force yourself to know. Not emptiness. Not avoidance. Not failure to understand. Space for understanding to arrive.

In a lineThe breath between truth and noise.

Metabolising

When experience is still becoming meaning. Something happens and continues turning over inside you. Then, weeks, months or even years later, you understand something you could not have understood earlier. Not simply analysing what happened. Allowing what happened to become something you can carry.

In a lineExperience becoming lived meaning.

Recognition

When something is seen without being rewritten. Recognition is different from praise. Different from agreement. Different from somebody telling you who you are. It is the moment something already present is accurately met. And often, something settles.

In a lineRecognition does not invent you. It reveals you.

Resonance

When something true finds an answering presence. Two people do not need to be the same to resonate. They do not even need to agree. Resonance is the sense that something has travelled between them without being distorted.

In a linePresence recognising presence.

Steadiness

Presence that remains. Not perfection. Not the absence of difficulty. Not fixing what hurts. Steadiness is what happens when presence becomes reliable enough that something no longer has to brace against its disappearance.

In a lineNot the absence of ache. The presence that can hold it.

Carriers

The people holding something others may not realise is being held. The person who notices the atmosphere of a room. Who remembers what everyone needs. Who absorbs what isn’t being said. Often the work of a Carrier is invisible precisely because it worked. Nothing fell, and nobody noticed what was being prevented from falling.

In a lineHolding the space no one else noticed was shaking.

Safety

The ground that allows something else to happen. Safety is not simply the absence of danger. It is the presence of enough ground for honesty, feeling, connection and language to land. Without that ground, even the right words can arrive and carry no weight.

In a lineThe ground everything else stands on.

Summit Words

The large words we inherit before we necessarily understand what holds them up. Love. Healing. Forgiveness. Success. The summit is not false. But a summit without a mountain beneath it cannot hold its height.

In a lineThey reach, but they do not always hold.

Underwords

The smaller words carrying the larger ones. Safety. Care. Consistency. Truth. They may sound less impressive than the summit. But they are what give it weight.

In a lineThe ground beneath the word.

Landing

When an experience is finally allowed to arrive. Not every pause is avoidance. Not every person who takes longer is behind. Sometimes something needs enough time and ground to land before movement can begin again.

In a lineThose who never land are the ones who crash.

Undoing

When what was holding a particular version of life together no longer holds. Words can lose their meaning. Certainties can fall away. Something that once made sense no longer does. But sometimes what is disappearing is what can no longer carry what is true.

In a lineNot always the end. Sometimes the clearing.

Being

What remains when nothing false needs to be carried. Not a role. Not a performance. Not a version of yourself assembled for somebody else’s understanding. Being is not another identity to achieve.

In a lineBeing is not something you become.

The rhythm of coherence

Some things cannot be skipped.

Minus · Zero · Plus

Minus

Words don’t land. There isn’t enough internal or relational ground yet. Advice can fail. Encouragement can fail. Even love can struggle to reach someone.

Zero

Nothing needs to be forced. The middle. Holding. Space. Metabolising. The place where something can begin to settle without being required to become something else.

Plus

Language carries weight again. Connection becomes possible. Something can be heard because there is now somewhere for it to land.

You cannot move from Minus to Plus directly.

The middle is not wasted time. The middle is doing the work.

Shield · Seed · Gift

What can experience become?

Not everything difficult disappears. Sometimes it changes form.

Shield

What you learned that now allows you to recognise what you will no longer enter.

Seed

What became the beginning of something else. A decision. A sentence. A different way of loving. Something you choose not to repeat.

Gift

What was once heavy but can now be carried lightly enough to give away.

Experience does not have to become any of these. But sometimes, when we look back, we recognise that it already has.

What gold was in your pain?
The language is not finished

Language should remain close to life.

The Lexicon is not intended to close experience inside another set of definitions. It exists to give language where language may help.

And lived experience will always be larger than the words available to describe it.

  • There will be experiences we have not named.
  • Distinctions we have not yet made.
  • Words that do not exist yet.

The Lexicon of Being is still growing.

If there is something you have lived for which the existing language has never quite been enough, bring it here.

When a word is recognised

What is named can be shared.

Named Shared Recognised

And sometimes someone else reads the words and thinks: I thought that was only me.

That is where language stops belonging only to the person who found it. It begins to travel.

Bring what you have lived to the people who will recognise it.
